Iron arc arc welding (GMAW), or Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding was first patented in the
USA in 1949 to acquire aluminum for welding. The arc and weld pool formed using a wire
electrode was protected by helium gas, which was then available. From about 1952 the
process became popular in the UK for the installation of aluminum welding using argon as a
protective gas, and in carbon emissions using CO2.
The CO2 and argon CO2 mixtures are known as reactive gas gas (MAG) processes. MIG is
a popular form of MMA, which offers high status rates and high productivity.
